What are you willing to do?

Tonight I stopped a gas station near the airport where I was scheduled to fly home and a young man approached me at the pump and offered to pump my gas.  I’m almost too old to remember when gas stations were full-service but I agreed and he and I engaged in light conversation about weather and travel and he did a good job pumping my gas.  While doing so another car pulled up and the owner noticed what was happening and his body language said “I’m open to some service myself” and my new friend picked right up on it–but indicated he could not take the cash it would have to be taken inside to the owners.  It was at this point that I figured out what was going on…the man was serving others and was not employed by the station.

Can’t say for sure but I’m guessing he was unemployed or was just friendly and service minded.   Either way, he got all  the cash in my wallet and I wished there had been more!  (at no time did he ask for money, infer he wanted money). His smile was cantagious and he left a great impression on me about the people of his town.  The mayor should put the man in his PR/Tourism office.

It led me to ask myself, what would I be willing to do for others with no reward?

Any thoughts?
