I’ve often heard the story of Moses taught like this: “Moses spent 40 years in the desert being prepared by God to lead the people out of Egypt.” But I can’t seem to find that anywhere in the Bible. The way I read the story, Moses makes a terrible mistake, runs, and 40 years later, after he thinks his life is over and he’s missed his best years, God shows up and tells him that he’s the man to lead Israel out of Egypt. Please don’t get the idea that Moses spent 40 years in the desert because he thought that’s where he could get the best training for his future mission.
God “found” Moses when He needed him, and even though Moses didn’t think he could do it, God knew he could.
Have you ever worried that you weren’t “in” God’s will? Or maybe you were praying for God to show you his will. We usually start searching when we face a big decision, like who we should marry or if we should take a new job. We start praying, hoping God will give us a yes or no answer.
The problem is we rarely get those answers. Even when we tell people that we know we’re doing God’s will, if we’re being honest, we really just hope we are.
The myth about God’s will is that you can miss it. I’m convinced now, more than ever, that if you want to know His will for your life, He’s not going to let you miss it.
Philippians 2:13
“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.”
According to Philippians, God is constantly working on His will in you. I don’t mean you can’t ignore God and his plans if you want to; I’m just saying when He’s ready, you’ll know. It may take 40 years longer than you thought, but you can take a deep breath and relax. God will set a bush on fire to get your attention if he has to. Just listen for His voice and obey what He says. You will always be in His will.
