This week President Barack Obama came out and endorsed gay marriage. This has gotten a lot of passionate response from Christians everywhere. While I wish President Obama didn’t feel the way he did, I also am not worried or concerned about the president’s views or the state of marriage in our country. If you were to only listen to peoples’ responses or only read your facebook timeline, you might be tempted to think that God was caught off guard this week, but he wasn’t. As you work through your thoughts and emotions about homosexuality keep a few things in mind.

God does not hate homosexuality more than he hates your lying tongue or the way you stir up conflict.
That’s the funny thing about God, he doesn’t rank sins like you and I. The Bible does tell us that sexual sins are sins against our body, but it doesn’t rank sins as worse than others. It does tell us however a few things that God hates, and oddly enough homosexuality isn’t on the list.

There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
Proverbs 6:16

God allows Barack Obama to be president.
Just like he allowed President Bush to be president, and just like he allows all authority to hold their position of power.

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
Romans 13:1

That makes you rethink the statement “God has his man in office” that we as Christians say when a republican wins an election. Every elected official is God’s man. That doesn’t mean that he approves of the way that they govern, but all you have to do is read the stories of the old testament kings to see that.

Christians aren’t hateful
The number one identifier  for people to know that we have a relationship with God is not what we are against, how many chain emails we send out, and how many facebook posts we can post about how evil the president is. The identifier is love.

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
John 13:34-35

If you find yourself getting a thrill or excitement when you get to bash something or say that great one-liner about homosexuals, all you are doing is tipping your hand that you don’t know God. Christians love. Period. It’s ok to tell someone they are going to hell, just don’t say it like you want them to go there.
